Introduction to Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated liquids found in plants that serve to protect, restore and respond to the plants environment. They are a mix of volatile organic compounds extracted from various parts of a plant, for example: seeds, bark, leaves, roots, stems or flowers, most commonly done through steam distillation. Citrus fruit peel is best processed differently through cold-pressing.

Why is purity so important?

A high level of purity is important because oil molecules are small enough to absorb through the skin and penetrate the body’s cell membranes. Essential oils are fat-soluble and can easily enter and affect the cells where needed.

The quality of oils determine whether they should be used for a more therapeutic purpose or not. Synthetic oils can be adulterated with herbicides, pesticides and solvents with traces of phthalates (plasticising agents), and we don’t want these absorbed into our body.

The purest oils are more expensive and in addition to guaranteed safety, retain their natural chemical properties if stored correctly. I have an oil from college in 2002 that still smells perfect and awakens my senses!

What are essential oils used for?

Essential oils have many uses and my mantra is ‘there is an oil for everything!’ I love my work because it involves finding the right oils and / or making unique oil blends, tailored to individual needs and preferences. Here’s some areas in general health and wellness where essential oils can help:

  • Seasonal or environmental threats
  • Supporting the immune system
  • Relieving occasional sleeplessness, restlessness and irritability
  • Relieving head and neck tension
  • Supporting cartilage and joint function
  • Helping with a weight loss plan
  • Emotional & spiritual support

Most essential oils can be used aromatically (through inhalation and diffusing) and topically (added to massage blends, bath water, and face & body creams etc.) but be warned, there can be quite a variation in quality.

I only work with 100% pure essential oils where their purity and composition are independently tested – you can even check up on each bottle’s batch tests online! They are safe for aromatic, topical and (where appropriate) internal use. This means I use my essential oils in additional ways to my training, which is quite exciting for me!

Here’s some reasons why I use Peppermint which is one of my daily favourites:

  • Promotes digestive health
  • Promotes feelings of clear airways and easy breathing when diffused
  • Inhale for an invigorating pick-me-up when driving
  • Add to a cold water compress or foot bath to cool off when overheated
  • Blends well with Lavender for a soothing massage blend
  • Add to shampoo or conditioner for a stimulating hair massage
  • Orally it freshens breath and can be used in oil pulling
  • Peppermint tea!
  • Repels bugs naturally

A word to the Wise

Essential oils are potent and powerful extracts from nature, and are highly effective at supporting us mentally, physically and spiritually. They have been used by humans over many centuries and are woven into the culture of almost every civilisation.

However, some education is recommended for learning how to use them correctly. I can recommended some good books, or you can talk to me as your trained aromatherapist and essential oil expert.

Please consult a medical professional before using essential oils for conditions, including using them during pregnancy, or for young children & the elderly.

To learn more about my work with essential oils (developed over seventeen years), to book a treatment, attend an essential oil workshop or to discuss having a bespoke blend made for you, please get in touch. I love talking the language of oils!
